Forbes ranks Boise #2 for business and careers

Forbes magazine recently selected Boise as the second-best place in the country for business and careers, behind only Raleigh, N.C., in its annual ranking released on March 19, 2008.

For the fourth straight year Boise landed in the top 5. Last year, Boise ranked third and was first in 2005. According to experts, ranking in the top 5 in the category for business and careers is one of the most prestigious of city rankings compiled by national business magazines.

A high Forbes ranking provides a marketing tool for state and local business recruiters like the Idaho Department of Commerce and the Boise Valley Economic Partnership.

“It's always beneficial to be in the top 10, but to be in the top five is absolutely incredible publicity,” Paul Hiller, executive director of the Boise Valley Economic Partnership, an arm of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce, told Idaho Tech Connect.

Hiller said he wasn't surprised that Boise ranked high. “There has been a lot of talk about a slowdown, but our unemployment is still under 3 percent, and we have a strong, diversified technology economy. When you look at Boise compared to other cities, we're still pretty strong.”

Hiller said his organization has had more inquiries in March than ever before from companies looking to expand to Boise.

The Forbes survey evaluated economic conditions in 200 of the largest metro areas in the United States (populations over 240,000) in nine categories, including the cost of doing business, job and income growth, labor costs, taxes, energy costs, office space expenses and cost of living index.

Other Rocky Mountain cities included in the top 50 include Fort Collins, Colo., at No. 3; Provo, Utah, at No. 11; Albuquerque, N.M., at No. 13; Colorado Spring, Colo., at No. 16; Ogden, Utah, at No. 23; and Denver, Colo., at No. 31.
